Several First Nations tribal members were joined by allies at the White House to deliver a clear message to President Obama on January 3rd, 2015. They call the pipeline a disastrous “death warrant” to the environment and people and criticize building a pipeline over the largest fresh water source in the United States.
The Indigenous activists want President Obama to veto the TransCanada Keystone XL pipeline bill if the new Congress passes it. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the incoming Majority Leader of the Senate, has said that passage of a bill allowing construction of the KXL is one of his top priorities. If President Obama vetoes the bill it will require 2/3 approval, or 67 votes to override that veto and become law..
Republicans not only have a majority in the Senate but a bigger majority in the US House of Representatives as a result of the midterm elections. The GOP vow to take up the KXL legislation as soon as they return from their Winter break.
The No KXL rally was being organized by a diverse national coalition of Native American leaders, environmental organizations, and individuals who agree that the Keystone XL Pipeline is not in the national interest, has the potential to contaminate the nation’s largest freshwater aquifer, and puts the lives of all people who live along its path in serious danger.
