Tennis star Tomic pleads not guilty to driving offences

BRISBANE, Australia — Australian teenage tennis star Bernard Tomic Tuesday pleaded not guilty to two traffic offences related to the driving of his high-powered, bright orange sportscar.

Tomic, 19, who helped Australia win its Davis Cup group tie over China on the weekend, faced Southport Magistrates Court over the Gold Coast incident which ended with a police stand-off outside his home.

“One charge is a charge of going over double lines, the other is a charge of failing to stop,” Tomic’s lawyer Chris Nyst told reporters outside court.

“They are the most minor matters as has been recognised by the court today.”

The charges stem from an incident in January when Tomic was fined twice in the space of an hour as he drove his BMW M3 — which he now plans to sell — just days after being knocked out of the Australian Open by Roger Federer.

Police allege he refused to stop when asked to pull over a third time.

Nyst said there was “no suggestion of irresponsible driving, dangerous driving, anything of that nature” and he would meet with police to discuss the matter.

Tomic told reporters outside court that the case, which has been adjourned for a further hearing in April, had no impact on his tennis.

“It’s not a big deal — I am playing well,” he said.

“We played well in the Davis Cup — we won five-love. We’re heading well and hopefully this year will be a good year for me.”

Tomic, who began his 2012 season by claiming his first senior title at the Kooyong Classic, is set to play in the Memphis International starting February 20.
