Arrest: Cedric Brown, 'one of Britain's most wanted men', has reportedly been caught in a stolen car

Remanded: Cedric Brown is due in court today

A young mother was carjacked outside her own home by an armed man who then drove off with her two toddlers still strapped in the back.

The woman was dragged from the driver’s seat at knifepoint seconds after she pulled up in her quiet suburban street with her one-year-old son and two-year-old daughter.

Officers – already pursuing the suspect and two alleged accomplices over an earlier burglary – gave chase with blue lights flashing and the car was stopped in a cul-de-sac half a mile away.

The suspect was arrested after what police described as a ‘violent struggle’.

The children were returned to their mother 15 minutes after they were  parted.

All three were physically unharmed although the mother is said  to have been left ‘extremely shaken’ by her ordeal.

Witnesses in the cul-de-sac last night described seeing the man being pinned to the ground by officers as a WPC carried the children from the car.

The drama occurred in Erdington,  Birmingham, on Tuesday morning,  but police only released details yesterday afternoon.

Neighbours of the carjacking victim, who has not been identified, told how they heard the panic-stricken mother scream out in shock as she was pulled out of the car in her tree-lined road.

She had only moved to the end-of-terrace home with her partner, thought to be a Royal Mail worker, and their two children four months ago.

Last night the couple remained too traumatised to comment on the carjacking. But the children’s grandmother told the Daily Mail her daughter had been left ‘hysterical’ after the man drove away with the two children.

The grandmother said: ‘I got a call  from my daughter after it happened. I was at work at the time and she was hysterical, as you can imagine.

‘She doesn’t want to talk about it. Her mind is all over the place at the moment.’

The police pursuit began after a
passer-by disturbed three men trying to break into a house a mile and a
half from where the carjacking later occurred and dialled 999.

Within moments West Midlands Police officers – already on the streets in
numbers as part of the force’s Operation Gem anti-burglary initiative –
spotted the alleged getaway car, a red Toyota, and an unmarked police
car set off  in pursuit.

A source close to the investigation said the carjacking unfolded so
quickly that officers only realised the children were in the car after
the driver had made his escape.

Neighbour Zoe Thomas, 33, was working from home in her front room when she heard the victim scream.

She said: ‘I thought at first it was just children playing as it’s the
Easter holidays but within minutes there were police swarming all over
the road talking into their radios and the helicopter was hovering
overhead.

‘It’s a really quiet neighbourhood and an officer told me that what happened was a totally random incident.

‘I took some flowers around to the mother afterwards and she was still really shaken up, as you would expect.’

Sergeant Nicholas Barnes said: ‘Several police vehicles were in  pursuit
and the man abandoned the  Ford Focus in South Grove where he  was
arrested by officers who then spotted the toddlers.

‘Thankfully, neither of them was  hurt and we quickly reunited them  with their mum who naturally was extremely relieved.

‘Officers responded to calls of the burglary within minutes. The
suspects simply didn’t have enough time to get away from the location
before they were swamped by police.’

Last night 44-year-old Cedric Brown was charged with robbery, two
counts of kidnap,  and possession of a knife. He was remanded in police
custody and will appear before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court this
morning.

Two other men arrested in an alleyway close to where the Toyota was
abandoned, a 19-year-old from Perry Common, Birmingham, and an
18-year-old from Romford, Essex, were released on police bail pending
further inquiries.
