A TWO-vehicle crash has caused traffic chaos on a major road in Sydney’s south east.

A car and truck collided on Southern Cross Drive between Trevilyan Ave and Gardeners Rd in Eastlakes about 9.35am, closing all three southbound lanes.

All lanes of Southern Cross Drive have now been reopened in following the accident.

There are still significant southbound delays with traffic stretching back to the Harbour Tunnel.

Southbound motorists are advised to allow additional travel time as traffic returns to normal.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said the collision happened about two kilometres from the Australian Golf Club, with a “substantial amount of debris” spread across most lanes.

A Transport Management Centre spokesman said all southbound lanes on Southern Cross Dr have been closed by emergency services, with significant delays experienced northbound. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

Witnesses said some frustrated motorists have abandoned their cars to avoid sitting in traffic.

Currently heavy holiday traffic on the Pacific Highway is being experienced at:

South Kempsey: 10km queue northbound – adding at least 30 minutes additional travel time

Bulahdelah: 2 km queue

Hexham, Macksville, Coffs Harbour, Ballina and the Tweed are also expected to see increasing traffic this afternoon.

Motorists heading southbound on the Princes Highway are advised to expect delays at Albion Park Rail, Nowra and Berry.

Southbound motorists heading out of Sydney should expect delays on the Hume Highway, while people heading through the Blue Mountains can expect delays on the Great Western Highway.
