THE parents of two children who perished in an early morning house fire tried to help them after hearing their screams.

The remains of one child have been found and investigators are looking for the remains of the other.

Detective Leading Senior Constable Glen Hatton said the parents woke to smell smoke just before 3am and came outside.

“The two occupants, the mum and the dad from the family, have attempted to put it out and have heard their two young children calling out to them,” he said.

“They have tried to get back in but have been unsuccessful in getting back into the house.

“At this stage it would appear to us that the two young children from the family have been unable to get out of the premises and have died as a result of the fire.”

Det Hatton said the parents, who work on the property on Blackwood-Dunkeld Rd, Dunkeld, and live on one of three homes on the property, were devastated.

He said the cause of the fire, believed to have started in the lounge room, was being investigated.

“There is nothing in our preliminary investigations to indicate that there is anything suspicious or any suspicious circumstances in relation to the fire.

“What we’ve basically got is a very tragic accident where two young children have died as a result of the fire.”

He praised the efforts of CFA crews.

“If they hadn’t been able to get here who knows what would have happened.”

Southern Grampians Mayor Robert Penny said the fire would have a big impact on the small Victorian town of Dunkeld.

“I have experienced this type of situation in my police career,” Cr Penny, a retired policeman, said.

“I understand the emotional trauma the emergency service personnel are experiencing adding to the fact they may know the victims.

“The impact on the community is huge. It’s devastating.”

He said he had received a briefing from police who remain at the scene.

Paramedics treated a man and woman for smoke inhalation, superficial burns and shock.

Both were taken to the Hamilton Hospital.

CFA spokeswoman Andrea Brown said the house, a garage and a car had been destroyed.

She said the cause of the blaze and where it started was unknown and would be the subject of an investigation.
