Trapped China rescuers pulled to safety

The five miners remain trapped at the Anlilai Coalmine in the Guizhou province, Xinhua reported on Thursday. The incident took place on Wednesday after a tunnel collapse.

The 53 rescuers, dispatched to dig a tunnel at the colliery, were trapped on Thursday after a second collapse. They were pulled out six hours later.

The coalmine has an annual output of 210,000 tons.

Accidents are frequent at China’s mines. The country’s mining industry is notorious for its lack of safety measures and high number of fatalities.

Latest figures show that 2,433 people died in coalmining accidents in China in 2010 — a rate of more than six workers per day.

But independent labor groups say the figure could be much higher as accidents are ‘covered up’ to prevent mine closures.

The Chinese government has shut down hundreds of mines as part of efforts to improve safety standards.
