THE husband of a Perth travel agent fatally stabbed in a bungled street robbery in Phuket says he is “absolutely devastated” and will never recover from the loss of his life partner.

Mother-of-three Michelle Smith, 60, was fatally stabbed in the heart during a bag-snatch gone wrong on the Thai holiday island last night.

Her husband, Geoff, told PerthNow he awoke to the tragic news at 4am yesterday when police visited his Butler home to tell him his wife of 35 years had been killed during the botched robbery in the popular Thai holiday spot.

Thai police are hunting two men who sped off on a motorcycle after the botched robbery, which happened at about 10.30pm local time (11.30pm WA time).

Mr Smith said he was struggling to comprehend how such a seasoned traveller like his wife had died in such tragic circumstances.

“She loved life, she loved travelling,” he said.

“She was a very experience travel agent. She’d worked in travel for 40 years. It was her passion, it was her life and she’s been to many exotic places around the world.

“There were no boundaries to her horizons.

“For the places she’s been on her own and with escorted tours, I can’t believe it.

“She’s bungee jumped off the Victoria Bridge…She’s been all around Thailand, India and nothing fazed her.”

Mr Smith said she had no doubt his wife would have done her utmost to defend herself and keep hold of her bag.

“She would have put up a fight, for sure,” he said.

“But it doesn’t seem worth it now.”

Mr Smith said his daughter Chanelle had made a mercy dash home to Perth, cutting short a work trip in Kalgoorlie this week. His son, Cameron, was also battling to come to terms with the news.

“They are both devastated,” he said.

“She was a wonderful mum and we have wonderful children.

“She was a very popular person, she had so many friends.”

Mr Smith is still waiting to find out from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade when he can repatriate his wife’s body.

“We’re not sure when her body will be released to come back to Australia at this stage,” he said.

The nine West Australian travel agents who were in Bali with Mrs Smith have returned home.

Fellow travel agent, Tammee Lynn, 42, of Attadale in Perth’s southern suburbs, suffered a gash to her arm.

ABC Radio today reported the nine were greeted by family and friends on their return to Perth last night.
