Tunisia to negotiate release of citizens taken hostage in Libya

According to Press TV, Touhami Abdouli, the Head of the Arab and African Affairs Department of Tunisia’s Foreign Ministry, said on Monday that the nationals were taken hostage in western Libya. He added that the militia, which is part of the Libya Dawn alliance, is holding the Tunisians as a bargaining chip for one of its commanders detained in Tunis.

Abdouli said Tunisia was determined to find a peaceful and political solution to the hostage crisis.

Media outlets quoted Abdouli as saying “We are going to try to make the effort to resolve this at the political level,” adding “I am optimistic.”

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Rezgui, the Tunisian consul in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, has confirmed that his fellow citizens were being kept in a troubled district of the city.

Rezgui said “Around 172 are being held by a militia allied to Libya Dawn… but there could be more,” adding “They are being held in the district of Salaheddine and we are in contact with Libyan authorities” about their well being.
