UK PM caves in to pressure over scandal

Cameron’s office announced that the Prime Minister had dinner with donors David Rowland, Andrew Feldman, Michael Farmer, Michael Spencer and Henry Angest between February 2011 and February 2012.

He also hosted a July 2010 dinner for Conservative Party chief executive Andrew Feldman, and party donors including Lord John Sainsbury, his office said.

“We have a robust and sensible system for raising money in the Conservative Party. All donations comply with electoral law”, claimed the Prime Minister.

“None of these dinners were fundraising dinners and none of these dinners were paid for by the taxpayer. Let me add, that Peter Cruddas has never recommended anyone to come to dinner in my flat, nor has he been to dinner there himself”, Cameron added.

Number 10 had previously declined to reveal a list of the people the Prime Minister has invited to dinner at Downing Street, calling such details “private”.

Ed Miliband, the chief of the opposition Labour party, said there needed to be “a proper independent investigation into what influence was sought, what influence was gained and what impact it had”.

Labour has also demanded the Tories to reveal the names of the people who met Cameron privately at Downing Street, saying the issue is too serious to be handled by an internal Tory investigation as Cameron earlier promised.

After revelations that Tories’ co-treasurer Peter Cruddas told undercover reporters acting as businessmen that £250,000 could bring them access to Cameron to “awesome” effect to their businesses, and Cameron’s own admitting that he treated top Tory backers to ‘private dinners in Downing Street, the Labour leader said the cash-for-influence scandal should be properly investigated.

“There needs to be a proper independent investigation into what influence was sought, what influence was gained and what impact it had,” Miliband said.
