UK PM to meet Romney against convention

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman confirmed that Cameron will meet the Republican Romney in Downing Street.

The meeting, which coincides with the eve of the Olympic Games, is potentially difficult for Cameron as he is by convention not meant to meet with candidates in another country’s election campaign.

Romney is due to attend the Olympic Opening Ceremony on Friday in east London, as well as other Olympic events in London with his wife, Ann.

He is due to arrive on Wednesday when he will also meet Chancellor of Exchequer George Osborne and Foreign Secretary William Hague.

He will also meet with Labour leader Ed Miliband and former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair. Romney will attend several fundraisers while in London as well, according to US reports.

Relations could be tense because Cameron accompanied President Obama on the election trail to a basketball match in Ohio, a key swing state and to a White House dinner attended by major financial donors.

Romney, who is trailing Democrat president Barack Obama by a narrow margin in the latest polls, is also due to meet Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg on Thursday.
