Police are yet to identify a man whose burnt remains were found at a motorcross track south-west of Melbourne.

Two motorbike riders made the gruesome discovery on Friday afternoon at the track on Broderick Road, Corio, a suburb of Geelong.

A police spokeswoman on Saturday said homicide squad detectives had not yet identified the man but said it appeared he had been strangled.

No other significant injuries were present and they would await the outcome of an autopsy, the spokeswoman said.

‘Detectives are not ruling out any possibilities as to how he may have died,’ she said.

Police on Friday said there was evidence the man’s body had been burnt at the site and there was ‘some suggestion that the body may have been tied up with some form of ligature’.

Police are particularly interested to hear from anyone who saw fire or movement in the area between 6pm (AEDT) on Thursday and 2.30pm Friday.
