PEOPLE smugglers have sent 2068 asylum seekers to Australia this summer, smashing records over the past four years.

Two more boats were picked up yesterday off Christmas Island with nearly 100 aboard each as the Gillard Government pleaded with the Opposition to help it stem the flow.

Twenty-five vessels have arrived since December and the number of asylum seekers has soared past the previous summer high of 1410 in 2009-10.

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said people smugglers were taking advantage of a political stalemate.

He said he was powerless to act while Opposition Leader Tony Abbott refused to back the Malaysia swap plan or negotiate another deterrent.

“Enough is enough. Australians expect Mr Abbott to work with the Government to stop people risking their lives at sea,” Mr Bowen said.

“Tony Abbott says he wants to stop the boats, but he is not willing to do what it takes to make this happen.”

But Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison slammed the blame-shifting.

The Opposition has rejected a Government offer to reopen a processing centre on Nauru in exchange for backing the Malaysian solution.

sBut the Government has not proposed another option, despite tackling the issue one of Julia Gillard’s core election promises.

“For me it would be an absolutely top priority,” Ms Gillard said in the 2010 election campaign on tackling boat arrivals.

“There’s not a quick fix here. It will require application, dedication, work, pursuing the dialogue, getting it done.”
