A Minnesota man has been arrested in the US for allegedly duping an Australian seller of custom-modified Xbox gaming consoles.

Brian Lawrence Reeves, 29, and the Australian merchant communicated over the internet and it was agreed Reeves would pay $US2726 ($A2570) with a credit card for two consoles, US authorities said.

When the consoles arrived in the post from Australia to Reeves’ workplace, an auto dealership in Minnetonka, outside Minneapolis, Reeves allegedly filed a fraud claim with his credit card company.

Reeves’ account was credited while the Australian lost the $US2726 payment.

Reeves told police he was the victim, claiming when the package arrived it contained rocks and paper, not the Xbox consoles.

After a police investigation, Reeves was arrested on a suspicion of theft charge.
