Fortuna, California – A woman and her baby were struck by a police car this weekend while crossing 15th Street and Main Street in Fortuna. Witnesses reported that the baby stroller was mangled under the grill of the officer’s car. Many witnesses also took photos of the wreck and sent them to local news stations.

According to Lost Coast Post, both the mother and the baby were taken to Redwood Memorial Hospital in the car that hit them. Luckily, both of them are expected to make a full recovery, although the woman reportedly suffered a small laceration to the leg after hitting the pavement while the child sustained a small laceration to its lip.

Shortly after the incident the California Highway Patrol issued the following statement:

In the late afternoon of Friday, May 29, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Humboldt Area responded to an injury traffic collision involving a Fortuna Police Department patrol vehicle and a mother and her stroller which contained her two year old boy.

At approximately 4:02 p.m., 29 year old Erin Hudson of Fortuna was pushing her stroller with her 2 year old boy in the crosswalk at the intersection of 15th Street at Main Street. Fortuna Police Officer Erler was driving his patrol vehicle on 15th going northbound approaching Main Street. Prior to the collision, Officer Erler brought his patrol vehicle to a stop at the intersection.

The public is encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they suspect a drunk driver. Callers should be prepared to provide the vehicle’s description, license plate number, location, and direction of travel.

That was a very strange way to end the press release, suggesting that perhaps there was suspicion that the driver of the vehicle was drunk, without elaborating in any way.

Police are sometimes the worst and most distracted drivers. Just last month we reported that YouTube content creator HaloMasterMind117 recently compiled three years worth of dash-cam footage, from his own personal dash-cam, showing police blatantly breaking traffic laws. In some clips, it shows officers in near accidents, which would have obviously been their fault.
