Consumers urged to hang up on phone scams

Consumers are being urged to hang up on callers promising to forward them fees purportedly owed by a bank.

Fair Trading commissioner Rod Stowe says scammers often claimed to be from a government agency or a bank.

“Callers claim they are representing Fair Trading or banks and some use the names Thomas Wilson, Patrick Turner or Jennifer Robinson,” he said in a statement.

“NSW Fair Trading does not cold call consumers and does not request payment via phone calls.”

Scammers have been known to dupe consumers by offering to transfer money via Western Union, or make deposits into a bank account.

“Recent scam calls have requested between $500 and $2000 from consumers to access bank refunds,” Mr Stowe said, adding they lowered the amount when consumers said they couldn’t afford the bill.

A consumer from Macksville, on the NSW mid-north coast, paid almost $2000 through Western Union to Lal Nun Pull, Maria Nikonova and K Thauga in New Delhi, India, after being promised she would receive $5800 in fees from two banks in Australia.

Mr Stowe said Fair Trading was investigating the use of a bank account in Australia that scammers had set up for the deposit of money.
