Driver trapped by live power lines rescued

A Victorian driver was trapped for over an hour by live power lines after a crash this morning.

The 34-year-old veered off the road and smashed into a power pole at Koo Wee Rup about 6.40am, the Herald Sun reports.

Senior Constable Gemma Hamilton said the man was incredibly lucky to walk away from the crash.

He was trapped for 90 minutes as the live power lines arced and the transformer caught fire at the rear of the car, she said.

“The power pole was down the middle of the car, across the top and the big box that’s on the side of the power pole it’s on fire, smoking, the whole lot,” she said.

“The voltage wires were either side of the driver.’’

Advanced life support paramedic Joanne Algie said paramedics had to warn the man not to get out of the car because of the high voltage power lines.

“When we got there he was quite confused and lying across the car towards the passenger side. The transformer continued smoking so CFA used a fan to keep the smoke from entering the vehicle,” she told the Herald Sun.

“The top of the power pole came down across the roof of the car, pushing the roof in.”

Police believe the man crashed after a rock flung up from a truck travelling in the opposite direction smashed through his windscreen.

Remarkably, the man walked away once the power was isolated, only suffering a deep cut to his ear.

Sen Constable Hamilton said she had never been to similar accidents where the driver had walked away.

“I felt physical ill when I actually saw him walk out of the car because I thought we’d be dragging him out,” she said.

The man was flown to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
