The Labor Party will today pledge to give free swimming lessons to every child under four years of age as part of an $80 million scheme if re-elected.
A report in the Sunday Mail newspaper quotes Premier Anna Bligh as promising parents 10 free swimming lessons for their toddlers at recognized swim centres.
Lessons normally cost between $17 and $20 each.
Around 10 toddlers drown in Queensland backyards each year.
The scheme will cost $77.4 million over three years and would begin July 1, if Labor were re-elected.
“We want to give every child a chance at those good foundations in the water,” Ms Bligh said in a statement.
Parents would download an e-voucher for $170, which they would then use at their local accredited swim school.
