A Melbourne woman felt her house shake and windows rattle in an earthquake on Friday night.

The Brunswick resident from Melbourne’s inner north said she came home to check her email when she felt the tremor about 7pm (AEDT) on Friday.

“Well, I had just got home and sat down to check my e-mail, when I felt the building shake and the windows and the objects on my desk rattle,” she told AAP.

The tremor sparked a social media flurry, with dozens of Melbourne residents reporting similar incidents.

“I posted a notice on Facebook, then checked twitter and saw that someone had started a `melbearthquake’ hashtag within seconds of the event,” the woman said.

The US Geological Service says an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 struck 117km east-southeast of Melbourne at 7.11pm (AEST), at a depth of 10km.

The epicentre of the quake was near the town of Moe, the USGS website says.
