Garden Island to be opened to cruisers

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard is expected to announce that Sydney’s Garden Island naval base will be opened to cruise ships in a bid to boost tourism.

Ms Gillard will unveil the plan to allow cruise ships to dock at Garden Island to delegates at the NSW Labor conference on Sunday, News Ltd reports.

She will reportedly announce that the government is preparing a long-term plan for the base, which will include expanding the number of guaranteed berths for the biggest visiting ships.

The move will turn the base into a new gateway for international visitors and pump millions into the local economy, she is expected to say.

The announcement comes after an independent review commissioned by the federal government and released in March found that allowing big cruise ships to dock at Garden Island was incompatible with the future needs of the navy.

The NSW government and the cruise liner industry have been pushing for ships to be allowed to dock at Garden Island during the high season.

Currently the only commercial berth available for large liners east of the Harbour Bridge is at the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said while national security was important a continued naval presence at Garden Island could be balanced with access for tourists and residents.

She said opening the facility’s docks to visiting cruise ships was great news for Sydney businesses.

“The news means more tourists providing a boost to our local economy,” Ms Moore said in a statement.

The cruise ship industry contributed around $3 billion to the Australian economy, she said.
