Investigators probe paramedic’s canyon death

The ambulance rescue helicopter returned to winch out the injured canyoner early on Christmas Day.

Officials from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) have been sent to the New South Wales south coast to investigate a winching accident that killed a paramedic.

Mick Wilson was part of the crew of an ambulance rescue helicopter dispatched on Christmas Eve to rescue a canyoner who had fallen in rugged bushland at Carrington Falls, south-west of Wollongong.

The NSW Ambulance Service says Mr Wilson died in an incident after he was winched down to the injured man.

But the service has refused to release more details while the ATSB investigates.

The investigators will today interview those who witnessed the fatal incident.

Police Superintendent Gary Worboys says Mr Wilson had 15 years experience as a paramedic.

“He was well qualified in these sorts of operations,” Superintendent Worboys said.

“I think all the emergency services face these sorts of challenges and the risk of death is always there. It’s a part and parcel of all our occupations.”

He says a number of things could have gone wrong during the rescue.

“The winching of patients out of national park, gorge-type areas is always a complex and difficult process,” Superintendent Worboys said.

“The investigation that police at Bowral are now doing for the coroner is certainly extended around the winching procedures and the environment they were faced with.”

The head of the ambulance service’s air rescue division, Ron Manning, made a brief statement on Christmas Day.

“The paramedic’s family has been notified and provided with support. Support for the paramedic’s colleagues has also been provided,” Dr Manning said.

“The death is a terrible tragedy for the family and for the Ambulance Service of New South Wales.”

The injured canyoner was winched to safety early on Christmas Day and is listed in a stable condition in hospital.
