A Gold Coast man with outlaw motor cycle gang links will “vigorously defend” a charge of murdering a nightclub promoter who plunged 31 floors to his death, his lawyer says.

Christopher Cairns, 24, from Hope Island, was arrested on Saturday and charged with the murder of Tumara Cousins, 29, earlier this month.

Police will allege Cairns threw Mr Cousins from the balcony of his unit at the Beachcomber Resort in Surfers Paradise on May 11.

Detective Superintendent Tim Trezise said at the weekend that police, who were initially unsure if the death was an accident, now believe others were in Mr Cousins’ unit when he died, and are searching for a second man.

“We’ve been looking extensively for him but haven’t been able to locate him,” he told reporters on Saturday.

A large pool of blood was found inside Mr Cousins’ ransacked unit and several people reported hearing loud yelling and swearing moments before he fell, he said.

Cairns was not required to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today and his lawyer, Mark Williams, made no application for bail.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta remanded him in custody to appear in the same court again on July 23 on charges of murder, robbery and possession of dangerous drugs.

“We will be vigorously defending the charges,’’ Mr Williams told reporters outside court.

“He’s doing well. I can’t make any further comment.”
