National holiday road toll rises to 35



THE death of a young motorist in Sydney, two car crashes in south-east Queensland and a motorbike accident in Tasmania have pushed the national holiday road death toll to 35.


A P-plater in his early twenties died when his car crashed into a tree on Denham Court Rd, Denham Court, in Sydney’s southwest, just after 5pm (AEST) on Friday.

He was declared dead at the scene. It took NSW’s holiday road death toll to 13.

In southeast Queensland two accidents claimed the lives of men earlier in the day.

In the first crash, a male driver hit a tree on Bells Pocket Road, Lawnton, north of Brisbane, around 2am (AEST).

The man was the only person in the car.

At 3.20am, another man died while driving along the Warrego Highway, Gatton, west of Brisbane.

The car crashed into a guard rail and hit a pylon.

The male driver, thought to be in his 40s, was also the sole occupant and was declared dead at the scene.

The accidents took Queensland’s holiday road toll to eight.

In Sheffield, northern Tasmania, a 45-year-old man died when his Honda motorcycle collided with a ute.

The rider was declared dead at the scene, on Union Bridge Rd.

In northern Victoria a man died and a woman was seriously injured in a single-car crash late on Thursday night.

The car struck a tree on the Hume Freeway near Wangaratta-Whitfield Rd in Wangaratta about 10pm.

Meanwhile, a driver who allegedly fled a hospital after a fatal crash in western NSW has faced a bedside court hearing in Sydney.

Passenger Eva Dalrymple, 79, died on Tuesday when the utility she was travelling hit a sedan on Muronbung Road at Ballimore near Dubbo.

Police alleged the 44-year-old sedan driver fled Dubbo hospital in an attempt to avoid police.

He was arrested and appeared at Kogarah Local Court, via a bedside hearing, was refused bail and is due to appear at Dubbo Local Court on January 9.

The national road toll period runs from 0001 December 23, 2011 until 2359 January 3, 2012, local times, in line with the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Board.
