Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman says his party had nothing to do with a flyer targeting his Labor opponent in Ashgrove over same-sex civil unions.
The Australian Family Association (AFA) has distributed a flyer telling voters in the Brisbane seat to put Kate Jones last on ballot papers because she supports same-sex civil unions.
It says civil unions violate children’s rights to a mum and a dad, and young people deserve better.
The flyer was circulated on Twitter on Monday alongside a message claiming the LNP supported the AFA.
In a reply posted on Twitter, Mr Newman said: “Sorry, the LNP does not have anything to do with this flyer.”
The AFA is seeking the repeal of Queensland’s civil unions laws, which were passed by the Labor government late last year.
It says its position is in keeping with the policies of the LNP and Katter’s Australian Party.
AFA spokeswoman Tempe Harvey says the association is not supported by the LNP.
“We’ve only put out the one flyer,” Ms Harvey told AAP.
“We want civil union laws repealed which is the same policy as the LNP’s but we are not supported by them.”
Ms Tempe says if voters oppose civil unions they should vote against Labor and the Greens.
