Three councils in south-east Queensland will have to re-establish their own water businesses after State Parliament last night passed legislation to dissolve water retailer Allconnex.
Last year the Gold Coast City Council voted to opt out of Allconnex, after a long row between councils and the Government over rising water bills.
It forced the Logan and Redlands councils to follow suit.
The Gold Coast council will now have to cover costs for the Redlands and Logan councils.
Water Utilities Minister Stephen Robertson says the Gold Coast council has been dishonest about the substantial profits it made from Allconnex.
“They are the worst council in Queensland,” he said.
The Opposition supported the legislation.
However, Opposition water spokesman Steve Dickson says the water retailers should never have been established.
“The Minister is trying to un-make an omelette and it’s an omelette that he actually made,” he said.
“If the Premier and the Minister hadn’t wrecked the system that was fine, they wouldn’t need to be legislating to re-establish anything.”
Logan Mayor Pam Parker says she relieved her ratepayers will not have to cover the cost of establishing a new water business, now Allconnex has been dissolved.
Councillor Parker says she is glad the Gold Coast has been ordered to cover the cost for her council and Redlands to start another water business.
“We’re just relieved this legislation’s gone through so we don’t get burdened with the extraordinary multi-millions of dollars of cost associated with the dismantling and the establishment of the new water companies,” she said
