Police treat Geelong death as suspicious

Police believe a man found dead in Geelong’s north had been tied up and burnt.

Two young men by made the shock discovery on Broderick Road, Corio, about 2.30pm today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre, of the homicide squad, said the body was found on vacant land used as a motocross track.

“It looks like the body has been burnt, possibly in situ,” he said.

“There is a suggestion the body may have been tied up with some form of ligature.”

Police are yet to formally identify the victim or provide an approximate age.

Detective McIntyre said the body was found in an open area between two mounds of soil and there was evidence of a fire.

He said police wished to speak to anyone who noticed activity or fire along Broderick Road between 6pm on Thursday and 6am today.

“We’re looking at the period of darkness,” he said.

“At this point in time we don’t know where this body has come from to be in this location. Whether this is a location they’ve bought it to hide it is hard to say at this point.”

Police set up a crime scene near the Geelong Ring Road overpass on the road and detectives and forensic specialists remain at the scene .

Police said the death was being treated as suspicious.

Roadblocks were in place on Broderick Road at either side of the overpass.
