SA Liberals blame Labor for power bills

South Australian Liberals say the state is about to have the most expensive electricity in the world because Labor is pushing wind and solar power.

The state government disagrees, attributing high prices to peaky demand thanks to extreme weather, ageing electricity assets and a high percentage of gas-fired generation.

Opposition leader Isobel Redmond said a report from the Energy Users Association of Australia, whose members include BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, BlueScope Steel, Westfield, Coles, Woolworths and Harvey Norman, shows SA prices are the third highest in the world after Denmark and Germany.

“We know that Denmark has more wind power than any other electricity market and Germany has the highest level of solar photovoltaics. The South Australian Labor Government has pushed both of these technologies here,” Ms Redmond says.

“When Labor’s Carbon Tax is introduced in July, the average power bill is tipped to rise by $150, which will make South Australian electricity prices the world’s highest.”

A spokesman for South Australia’s Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy, Tom Koutsantonis, said renewable energy certificates allowed SA to recover the additional cost of operating wind farms.

Rising power prices were being driven by the need to replace old assets and new investment in network and generation, he said.

SA also has a high percentage of relatively expensive gas-fired electricity generation.

Matthew Warren, the head of the Energy Supply Association of Australia, said electricity inflation was being “driven by structural changes across the energy sector: upgrading of ageing networks and infrastructure, continued increases in peak demand, a shift to lower-emission technologies and increases in the cost of fuels”.

He said much of the Energy Users report was being sensationalised.
