The Speaker of Tasmania’s House of Assembly, Michael Polley, is backing the Premier, Lara Giddings, saying there is no threat to her leadership.
But Mr Polley flagged the Infrastructure Minister, David O’Byrne as a possible future Labor leader.
The Premier has been forced to quash speculation her leadership is under threat because of growing party disunity about her budget savings strategy.
Unions are agitating for a change of leadership, but the business community is backing Ms Giddings.
Union leaders are advising the Premier to back down over the budget cuts or step aside for a new leader.
Ms Giddings is claiming disgruntled unionists are behind a push to replace her with the Infrastructure Minister, and former union leader, David O’Byrne, who has ruled out a challenge for now.
Corporate governance analyst Tom Baxter believes only a matter of time.
“If David O’Byrne has the numbers, then the question is when he wants the job,” he said.
Mr Baxter says the Infrastructure Minister and former union leader has an advantage over the Premier as he doesn’t carry the baggage of successive Labor governments.
But he says the government would lose the confidence of business and the wider community if there’s a change of leadership
“Three Premiers in one term certainly would be unsettling particularly in a time when Tasmania is grappling with such difficult budget challenges,” he said.
“So certainly for a government to confront the prospect of having that many changes within one term of government wouldn’t inspire the confidence which businesses and the wider community needs at the moment.”
The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Michael Polley supports the Premier.
“Look she is the best person to be leading Tasmania this time and she’s a person of great strength and conviction and she’s on the right track,” he said.
Mr Polley added Ms Giddings would survive any leadership challenge, but says David O’Byrne may become Labor leader in the future.
“You know I suppose he’s a young man, as the years roll by one day he may become leader of the Labor party but it certainly won’t be before the next election.”
