A MAN killed in a “speedflying” accident in New Zealand’s South Island has been named as 40-year-old Sean Kerridge.

Mr Kerridge had been living near Wanaka part-time for a year and was well-known in the emerging extreme sport community.

He was killed when he crashed in windy conditions near the Treble Cone skifield yesterday.

Speedflying is described as a combination of paragliding and skydiving, where the pilot travels at high speed – up to 100km/h – close to the ground.

It was a high-risk activity and still a “relatively new and fringe sport” in New Zealand, Wanaka speedflying enthusiast Mal Haskins told the Otago Daily Times.

“It involves high speed and proximity to the ground, so it involves a lot of skill … and not much room for error.”

Mr Kerridge had been speedflying for about two years.

He was based in Wanaka, while also spending time working in Australia during the past year, and was well known in New Zealand’s speedflying community, Mr Haskins said.

The accident was seen by at least one other paraglider in the area at the time.
