Remember ‘the feelies’ in Aldous Huxley’s predictive programming masterpiece, ‘Brave New World’? Written when ‘talking pictures’ were still a novelty in 1931, Huxley described the future cinema as “the feelies”: what we call ‘virtual reality’ holography today.

Much more than 3D, the ‘feelies’ actually synthesized the most potent emotions to the intensity of passion. The audience were made to feel the emotions of action in the story lines, even anger, hate and aggression. The induced passions cinema of Huxley’s Brave New World gave the pacified public precisely the passions and behavior that had been banned by the State. The scientific State has eliminated all passions, though drugs (soma), programming, and eugenic selection. Not just anger and aggression, but filial love is eliminated as much as romantic love.

Because human beings can’t really ‘evolve’ beyond our nature, Huxley – the Fabian Socialist – knew that even the dumbed down, doped up, PC programmed herd has the potential for revival of the passions behind self preservation, filial piety, indignation at being enslaved. Huxley’s ‘feelies’ are just a sci-fi exaggeration of the movie industry we already have.
