Backflip on boats – Tony Abbott wavers on policy

OPPOSITION Leader Tony Abbott appeared to ditch his boat phone election promise to turn back asylum seekers after admitting yesterday he had no idea how it would work.

Mr Abbott promised during the election to give prime ministerial veto over navy or border protection vessels on turning back boats.

It would mean the prime minister could call a commander and order a boat be turned around on the high seas.

However, Mr Abbott yesterday said the decision to turn back boats would in fact be left with the commander in the field.

Mr Abbott said he was referring to how boats would actually be physically turned around. For instance, if they were to be towed by rope and maintained he would still, in government, insist on prime ministerial veto over the “decision” to turn back boats.

Mr Abbott had said on radio yesterday, in response to questions about turning back boats: “Um, well, that’s the kind of operational question that would have to be worked out by the commander on the spot.

“I’m not going to set myself up as an expert.”

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen seized on the backflip, claiming it showed the Opposition Leader had no comprehension of border protection.

“Tony Abbott has disconnected his controversial boat phone after faltering over the facts of his own towing back the boats policy,” Mr Bowen said.

“We know that Mr Abbott has walked away from offshore processing and signalled the green light to people smugglers, but now it seems he has hung up his precious boat phone as well.

“We already knew that towing back the boats was a dangerous and unworkable policy, but now Mr Abbott has finally disconnected the boat phone.”
