THE Australian Greens have chosen winemaker and economist Peter Whish-Wilson to replace Bob Brown as a Tasmanian senator.

The 44-year-old University of Tasmania economist has previously been a candidate for the Greens in Senate and Tasmanian state elections.

Greens leader Christine Milne said today the new senator would bolster the party’s economic credentials.

“Peter will be a superb representative for Tasmania,” she said.

“As an economist, business owner and campaigner to stop a polluting pulp mill in the Tamar Valley, he brings great experience and an excellent skills-set to the Senate and the Greens party room.”

Senator-designate Whish-Wilson said he was humbled by the decision.

“It’s a very significant move for the Greens to put a senator in the north of Tasmania,” he told reporters in Hobart.

“And it’s also a very strong message from the Greens that they will continue to oppose the pulp mill in the Tamar Valley.”

Senator Brown said the new senator was “energetic”.

“Like his wines, Peter is a gold-medal product,” Senator Brown said.
