POLICE have charged a man with the murder of Senior Constable David Rixon in Tamworth earlier this month.

Senior Constable Rixon, 40, was gunned down in West Tamworth about 8am on March 2 after pulling over a vehicle in Lorraine Street.

Michael Alan Jacobs, 48, was allegedly the driver of the car and the man who shot the father of six.

Jacobs also suffered a gunshot wound and has been in hospital in Newcastle under police guard since the incident.

He was charged with murder today and refused bail, police said in a statement.

They will allege he acted alone and that the shooting arose from an attempt to submit Jacobs to a random breath test.

The matter will be mentioned in Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday afternoon.

State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad has been leading Strike Force Fairfull, a critical-incident investigation into the shooting.

The investigation is continuing.
