Newman looks forward to a Bligh face-off

THE Liberal National Party leader, Campbell Newman, is no clown when it comes to politics, but he was happy about being able to debate with the Premier, Anna Bligh.

Mr Newman, who is trying to win the seat of Ashgrove so he can enter state politics next year, worked an hour-long shift at The Gap’s McDonald’s restaurant yesterday. The outlet is in the electorate he is running for, which is held by Labor’s Kate Jones.

Ms Jones completed her own shift before the lunchtime rush.

The questions being posed by residents to their prospective local MP yesterday were tame, but that will not be the case when he faces off with Ms Bligh in a debate before next year’s state election. The pair will verbally joust at Customs House, Brisbane, on November 25.

Ms Bligh and Mr Newman will address the topic: Queensland has emerged from a rough patch but we have a good long-term future that can be made better if we get things right now. Mr Newman said he intended to expand on the LNP’s vision for Queensland during the debate.

”I am looking forward to the opportunity to talk about the real issues like the cost of living and the way this government doesn’t deliver major projects and its waste and inefficiency,” Mr Newman said.

”I want to outline very clearly what our vision is for Queensland, because we do have a vision. It will be a good chance to talk about that and flesh more of that out.”

A newspaper will supply a moderator and the questions and the floor will then be opened to questions from 100 invited readers.

However, Mr Newman expects at least one more debate before the election and appeared open to more question and answer confrontations with Ms Bligh, should the opportunity arise.

”I’m sure there will be traditional debate that the Queensland Media Club runs each time during the actual campaign,” Mr Newman said.

Constituent Ron Ward, who posed for a photo with Mr Newman wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with ”My boss is a clown” and ”vote Ronald” said he had a soft spot for Ms Jones but would vote for Mr Newman because of his dislike of the Premier.

”If they were in different electorates, I’d vote for both of them,” Mr Ward said. ”[Ms Jones is] a nice person and he’s a decent bloke but I don’t like Anna Bligh.”
