SA teenager admits to triple murder

The South Australian family of a couple and daughter stabbed to death by a teenager are surprised the young man has admitted he killed them.

In the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Wednesday, Jason Alexander Downie, 19, pleaded guilty to the murder of Andrew and Rose Rowe and their 16-year-old daughter Chantelle in their Kapunda home in November last year.

Downie, of Kapunda, north of Adelaide, appeared via videolink and his pleas triggered emotional scenes inside the packed court among friends and supporters of the Rowe family.

Outside of court, the niece of the dead couple, Kylie Duffield, said she felt “emptiness” but was thankful for the guilty plea.

“Coming here (we were) expecting a different outcome so we’re just trying to absorb the one we just heard,” she told journalists on Wednesday.

She thanked police but said the admission of guilt had not made dealing with the deaths any easier.

“Do we wake up in the morning and pick up the phone and talk to them? Do we watch a 16, 17 year-old girl now have a baby, get married?” she said.

“When you hear guilty or not guilty it makes no difference other than the fact now we don’t have to sit through any more gruelling processes.”

But her pain did not compare to that of the family’s surviving son Christopher Rowe.

“Christopher wakes up everyday and clasps on to God knows what. We just don’t know where he gets it from,” she said.

Ms Duffield said she would have liked Downie to face court in person and confront the family he has hurt.

Now she just hopes the plea will allow the family and community to move on.

Detective Superintendent Grant Moyle said it was an “understatement” that there was a compelling case against Downie.

“We’re pleased that this is a step down the road of recovery for the family,” he told journalists outside of court.

“They’ll never recover fully and they will bear the brunt of this terrible crime for many years to come (but) it is one more step in the right direction.”
