Bahrainis rally afresh around Manama

The demonstrations took place on Saturday, a day after three opposition leaders were injured by the Saudi-backed Bahraini forces during protests.

On Friday, Saudi-backed security forces attacked a peaceful pro-democracy demonstration in the town of Bilad al-Qadeem, three kilometers away from Manama, firing rubber bullets and birdshots to disperse the demonstrators.

In a statement released on Friday, the major Bahraini opposition party, Al-Wefaq said the party’s Secretary-General Sheikh Ali Salman had been wounded in the shoulder with rubber bullets during the demonstration, adding that Jawad Fairouz and Hasan al-Marzouq — two other senior leaders — had also been injured.

“Security forces besieged the area, chased citizens, and repressed them brutally, beating them up and firing live rounds at them,” it added.

The Persian Gulf island has been witnessing a popular anti-regime revolution since February 2011.

Scores of people have been killed and many others injured in the regime-led attacks on the protesters. The demonstrators hold King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa responsible for the deaths.
