Russia decries US sanctions on Iran

US President Barack Obama issued an executive order on April 23, providing penalties for ‘the violation of basic human rights via telecommunications technologies,’ particularly in Syria and Iran, said Dolgov in a Thursday statement on Russia’s Foreign Ministry website.

The document is mainly aimed at mounting pressure on governments opposing the US, including blocking access to high-tech products, the statement said.

It also pointed out that the US has once again used the slogans of human rights and democracy as a cover-up for its political objectives.

The Russian official stated that the executive order follows Washington’s ‘unacceptable extraterritorial’ application of national legislation on foreign citizens and legal persons.

He emphasized that such unilateral sanctions imposed by the US administration and congress would have unprecedented consequences and raise serious concerns.

Such measures are contrary to the internationally recognized legal norms and will undermine the collective work to resolve key regional problems, especially in the United Nations, Dolgov noted.

He added that no one has given the United States the authority to act as an international arbiter of rights issues, who can assume the right to accuse or punish the perpetrators on such issues.

The statement further said that the US has focused its attention on institutionalizing humanitarian standards in other countries, but makes no serious efforts to resolve its internal problems.

The Russian official urged US authorities to prosecute their own officials and soldiers who have direct links to human rights violations around the globe, including torture in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib prisons, and the killings of civilians by the US military in different countries.

The practice of double standards on human rights is inadmissible, the statement said, adding that Russia and the vast majority of the international community oppose such moves.
