Yachtsman could be stranded on remote Pacific island after shipwreck

“He is very cautious about sea safety and we are all hoping he has washed
up somewhere and is safe,” a friend told The Adelaide Advertiser.

An Adelaide port manager, Carl Kavina, said Mr Thompson was a skilled seaman
and the yacht was well equipped to deal with emergencies.

“He is a very experienced mariner and we all hope the chances are good,”
he said. “I know he had all the safety gear they required and so we
don’t know what happened.”

The yachtsmen have not been heard of since Thursday night when they called a
relative of the Australian via satellite phone to say the ship had run
aground and was breaking up.

New Zealand rescue authorities, who have been conducting searches, said
inspections of the water had been thorough and the effort would focus on the
island at first light tomorrow.

“Conditions were good for searching and our search crews are confident
they would have seen the men if they had been in the water,” said a
spokesman, Tracy Brickles.
