Bowen Basin coal miners to resume strikes

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) central Queensland coal miners will resume their strikes next week after rejecting the company’s latest workplace offer.

More than 80 per cent of Bowen Basin workers voted against BMA’s most recent offer, in an industrial dispute that has been running for more than 18 months.

Members of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), the Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) announced their intention to strike for seven days, beginning next Thursday.

CFMEU district president Steve Smyth said the dispute was about conditions, and not workers trying to grab more money.

“It’s purely about issues of rosters, housing and safety on the sites,” Mr Smyth told AAP on Saturday.

“We’re not wanting any more than we already have.”

He said more than 3500 workers across all six of BMA’s Bowen Basin sites would be involved in the strikes.

BHP Billiton spokeswoman Kelly Quirke said the company was disappointed by the unions’ actions.

“Further industrial action is unnecessary and would be harmful for all concerned. As the record has shown, it will not help resolution of an agreement,” she told AAP.

“We are focused on finalising an agreement and will resume discussions to complete the agreement as soon as possible.”

Queensland Treasurer Tim Nicholls said on Friday further industrial action could jeopardise the state’s investment pipeline, costing the state mining royalties.

Mr Smyth acknowledged the strike was damaging to the economy.

“This dispute is also hurting our workers and their families,” he said.

“We want to end it too.”
