Crews to monitor Vic factory after blaze

Firefighters needed almost an hour and a half to bring a large industrial blaze in Melbourne’s west under control.

Fire crews arrived at All West Wreckers and neighbouring Quinlan Cranes on Fitzgerald Road, Laverton North, shortly before 12.45pm (AEDT) on Monday.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) assistant chief fire officer David Bruce said the inferno was under control by 2.10pm.

Twenty fire trucks carrying 85 firefighters from the MFB and Country Fire Authority were at the scene of the blaze, which covered about 50 square metres.

Staff had been at the businesses earlier in the day but had left before the fire began, Mr Bruce said.

The wrecking business was significantly damaged, but expensive equipment inside the crane warehouse was saved, he said.

Some fire crews would keep watch overnight to ensure there were no flare-ups, and investigators would start work on Tuesday morning to determine the cause of the blaze.

The MFB issued a warning at 2pm advising people nearby to stay indoors and avoid the smoke.
