Electrocution fears spark recall of cords

People are being told to check their household extension cords, following a national recall of products that may cause electric shocks.

HPM has recalled extension cords R2702, R2703, R2705, R2707, R2710 and R2715, as well as piggyback extension cords R2601, R2602, R2604, R2606 and R2610, NSW Fair Trading said in a statement on Friday.

All plugs are marked with CAT 100C/6 or CAT 101C, and have a date code of 2/2012, 3/2012 or 4/2012.

The cords, which were sold across Australia between March 1 and June 8, have a wiring defect that has caused some to have their Active-Neutral or Active-Earth wires swapped.

“If an exposed earthed metal appliance were to be plugged into a cord with an Earth-Active configuration there is a serious possibility a person would be electrocuted,” NSW Fair Trading commissioner Rod Stowe said.

Consumers should stop using the products immediately and unplug them, he said.

For more information people can call HPM Legrand Australia on 1300 369 777 between 9am and 5pm (AEST) Monday to Friday.
