A spate of earthquakes across the middle of the U.S. is “almost certainly” man-made, and may be caused by wastewater from oil or gas drilling injected into the ground, U.S. government scientists said in a study.

Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey said that for the three decades until 2000, seismic events in the nation’s midsection averaged 21 a year. They jumped to 50 in 2009, 87 in 2010 and 134 in 2011.

Those statistics, included in the abstract of a research paper to be discussed at the Seismological Society of America conference next week in San Diego, will add pressure on anenergy industry already confronting more regulation of the process of hydraulic fracturing.

“Our scientists cite a series of examples for which an uptick in seismic activity is observed in areas where the disposal of wastewater through deep-well injection increased significantly,”David Hayes, the deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Interior, said in a blog post yesterday, describing research by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey.

  1. the noises people hear in there communities lately what is it? digging? are they placing underground nukes to spike earth quakes? what about the weapon HAARPS ?

I would not want to be in the shoos of those police or military paid to abuse or control the slaves when all hell brakes loose. They will repend, oh man will they repend for having served evil minds giving them orders they accepted to follow dispite GOD’s warnings.

You live by the sword, you will end by the sword?????? is that not another way of saying what goes around comes around?

  2. Aren’t these the same ‘scientists’ that promote Global Warming?

    Let’s see…
Global Warming advocates dramatically reducing energy use.

This Article implies we stop fracking because of increased Earthquakes which would…. dramatically reduce energy use.

People,,, I wouldn’t believe anything the US Government puts out. As Gomer Pile used to say

    lie,lie,lie,,,, lie, lie…

They lie so much how could one ever know if they were being truthful. Cry Wolf comes to mind…

Might want to seek out the facts on fracking and it’s effect on ground water before equating it with the global warming hoax and dismissing it entirely.

    agreed

  3. I heard one quart of oil if dumped into the ground could contaminate like a million gallons of water or whatever the amount was. Now we have oil and gas companies fracking and purposely spilling oil and waste into giant underground aquafiers that provide drinking water for half the country? What gives them the right.

That is true. The hydrocarbons in oil contain a variety of chemicals including Benzene (one of the worsy due tp thd ring of six carbon atoms which allow for two rings of electrons on each side, acting as molecular circular saws).

Oil is naturally acidic and will “eat” it’s way through plastic.

So it was no problem spewing millions of gallons into the gulf.

the oil is the least of our worries, when i was fracturing in Alberta the waste water was held in flow back tanks on surface, the water was so lethal, that when the birds came down for a drink they never made it out of the tank, and that’s just in a matter of seconds that their bodies shut down. I told them for years to cover the tanks and every morning when we returned to the lease, the tanks were full of little prairie birds, now you can see why the farmers would be upset about their water wells being contaminated, Now back to story of fracturing being the cause…All Bullsh*t, Fracturing has been going on in Alberta for the last 80 years, we have never in our history had underground explosions due to waste water or spent gasses. i have witnessed thousands of liters of chemicals and diesel being pumped into a well just to reduce viscosity in the oil so we could retrieve our down hole tools, and nothing has ever just blown up, I’ve seen wells 3000 meters deep with 30 mPa and roughly 200 degrees celsius, and not even a vibration, it’s definately a bogus story!

good post thanks , i was just thinking that it was improbable for fracking to cause earthquakes due to the lenght of time this technology has been in use , and generally the mass of the earth.

now water contamination is a completely different can of worms.

  4. What the frack are we going to do about all the Fracking?

  5. FRACKING IS USUAL BUT DANGEROUS LOOK UP WHAT HAPPENED IN DENVER CITY TEXAS QUITE A WHILE BACK AGO
AND THE COMPANY WAS OCCIDENTAL remember this company it has been there quite a while and is being run down the toilet by that company who owns it is AL GHOUL OF TENN.

  6. Ok!! That’s so good!!
Now we know how to release the tectonic energy.
    It’s time to harvest it!!

    “Tectonic Energy” is soooooooooooooooo green!!

We need just a way to convert it to electricity!!!

    Any Idea?
    Giant Piezoelectric Converters?
Squeezing water between them, and then using the high pressure water?
    ….

  7. EH ALEX, if you’re worried about fracking and oil why dont u and your useless wife sell your Suburban suv’s and maybe by a prius, or better yet just walk your fat asses. just askin

  8. i can here it now ” we have to shut down all oil production because big oil poluted all your drinking water , so no oil and no water …….. unless you get it from your government”.

the oil companies are evil , EVIL , OH MY GOD ! WE NEED GREEN POWER NOW!
    AL GORE SAVE ME
