Injured soldier glad mates are coming home

A soldier left with severe wounds after serving in Afghanistan says he is pleased a plan has been drawn up to get his mates out of the line of fire.

Townsville-based former bomb disposal expert Sergeant Michael Lyddiard has welcomed Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s plan to start withdrawing troops in mid-2013.

He was in Brisbane on Wednesday to support Queensland’s 2012 RSL Anzac Appeal launch.

Ms Gillard said on Tuesday once the process was started, it would take 12 to 18 months to pull the troops out.

Sgt Lyddiard, who lost his right eye and lower right arm in an explosion in Afghanistan in November 2007, says the war is worthwhile but he is happy it is drawing to an end.

“It shows how well the Australians have been working with the coalition forces,” he said.

“It shows great teamwork and how professional Australian soldiers are.

“It’s a good reflection of our work ethic.”

Sgt Lyddiard says the challenge for the federal government once troops start returning home is to ensure their physical and mental condition is looked after.

The soldier, who is still serving in the Australian army away from the frontline, says organisations like the RSL will provide a wealth of support for soldiers once the fighting ceases.

“The RSL does so much across the state to support veterans, including those who have been injured while serving overseas,” he said.

TV personality Wilbur Wilde also threw his support behind the RSL Anzac appeal at the launch.

“I have a son who has served overseas and he really supports what the RSL has done,” he said.

“I’ve got mates who are Vietnam vets … and I know how much they appreciate the support of the RSL.”

RSL Queensland chairman Terry Meehan hopes to raise $420,000, representing the 420,000 Queenslanders who have served the country in battle since 1915.
