Residents of Victoria and South Australia have been warned to prepare for extreme weather conditions as an ongoing heatwave sends temperatures soaring into the 40s.
In Victoria a total fire ban is in force for the Wimmera, South West, Mallee and Central districts, with temperatures as high as 43 degrees Celsius expected.
In suburban Melbourne the mercury is forecast to top 40 degrees today due to hot northerly winds.
Victoria’s Emergency Services Commissioner Craig Lappsley says campers should take extra care to ensure camp fires are extinguished.
He says the fire danger is extreme in areas like the Portland and Warrnambool areas and visitors should make it their business to know the local conditions.
“There will be a trough move through south-western Victoria this afternoon,” he said.
“It will be a shallow trough… but it still could provide gusty winds for a short period of time so people really need to be conscious about the weather conditions and where they are.”
In SA total fire bans have been declared in all districts except for the Adelaide Metropolitan and Lower Eyre Peninsula regions.
Zoos SA has closed the Monarto Zoo and the Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary because of the high fire danger, while ETSA says it may need to interrupt electricity supplies in some high-risk bushfire areas to protect lives and property.
Adelaide had it hottest New Year’s Day in 112 years yesterday when the temperature reached 41.6 degrees, while Ceduna on SA’s west coast recorded 46.2 degrees.
John Burns from Ambulance Victoria says people should avoid alcohol and drink plenty of water during the searing heat.
“We would just urge everyone to stay indoors where possible. Hydrate, it is a public holiday so hydrate,” he said.
“Look after themselves, look after their children and look after their neighbours and their elderly relatives.”
The weather bureau is expecting temperatures to stay in the high 30s in most communities, but temperatures are expected to drop to the mid-20s by the end of the week.
