The incident took place near the city of Al-Arish, where a car bomb targeted an Egyptian army convoy, on Wednesday.
“A parked car blew up as the military convoy passed,” a security official said.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the deadly assault.
However, officials say it bore the hallmarks of militant groups who have stepped up attacks on soldiers and policemen since the army toppled former president, Mohamed Morsi, in July.
Wednesday’s assault has been branded as the bloodiest in the Peninsula, since a number of unknown gunmen killed 25 policemen in the town of Rafah in North Sinia, during an ambush on a convoy of security forces on August 19.
The Sinai Peninsula has long been considered a safe haven for militants and criminal gangs who use the region as a base for terror activities.
Cairo has launched several offensives against the militants, sending thousands of troops backed by tanks and heavy equipment into the region to crush militancy.
Egypt’s army has been also engaged in a sweeping crackdown on supporters of Morsi, as well as Muslim Brotherhood Movement in other parts of the country.
The crackdown by the arm-backed interim government has resulted in more than 1,000 being killed and some 2,000 being detained throughout the country since August.
