1000s join global anti-nuclear protest

The rallies on Sunday were held in Japan, France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, Australia and Taiwan.

Some 15,800 people died and more than 3,000 others remain unaccounted for as a result of the crisis that hit northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011.

A minute of silence was held across Japan at 2:46 pm (0546 GMT) local time to honor the victims of the tragic event.

The protesters in Japan demanded an end to nuclear energy in the country as well as compensation for the victims of the atomic plant meltdown.

Thousands of Taiwanese protesters also held a minute of silence and called upon their government to close the nuclear plants in the country.

In Germany, organizers estimated the turnout of the rally to have exceeded 50,000 with protesters holding placard reading “nuclear power – no thanks.”

Several protesters in France wore gas masks to illustrate the dangers of inhaling nuclear-polluted air while carrying a banner reading “the worst environmental pollution.”
