April marks the anniversary of the founding of Apple and the release of the first Apple computer in 1976. Almost 40 years later, Apple has become an industry leader, branching out from computers to encompass software, music and phones. Apple has become synonymous with innovation, user friendliness and style.

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computers Inc. on April 1, 1976. In 2011, Jobs passed away. His impact cannot be understated. Jobs has had a hand in virtually every successful product produced by Apple. In 1985, due to differences with the company, Jobs left Apple to form his own company NeXT Inc. Wozniak left Apple later in 1987.

Apple went on to do quite well without Jobs for several years but then began to decline because of repeated failed projects. In 1996, Apple purchased Jobs’ NeXT Inc. to help refine Apple’s operating systems and this brought Jobs back to Apple. The current CEO was ousted by the board and Jobs was made CEO thus beginning Apple’s unstoppable rise to its current position as a corporate giant.

Here now is a trip through history highlighting the various products of Apple over the years.

  • The Apple 1 was designed solely by Steve Wozniak and funded by Steve Jobs, who sold his car. The Apple 1 was nothing more than a circuitry board and customers had to provide their own case, keyboard and display, like the custom wooden case pictured here.
  • Again designed solely by Steve Wozniak, the Apple II was an immensely successful follow up to the Apple I. The Apple II was sold into the 90s, and solidified Apple as a successful company.
  • Released in 1984, the Macintosh was introduced following the legendary “1984” commercial that aired during Super Bowl XVIII. The Macintosh was the first home computer to feature a mouse and a graphical user interface.
  • After failing to produce a portable computer with the Macintosh Portable in 1989, the PowerBook was released in 1991. The design of the PowerBook was an innovation over portable computers of the time, and would set the standard for the design of future laptops.
  • Development of the Newton began before there was the concept of a PDA. Released in 1993, the Newton was not a success, but many pieces of the Newton’s architecture would be utilized in other Apple products.
  • The original egg shaped iMac was released in 1998. The idea of this computer was to be ready to go right out of the box. A popular commercial for the iMac emphasized its ability to connect to the internet in only two steps.
  • Apple launched iTunes in early 2001 exclusively for their Mac OS, but has since grown to support numerous platforms. The elegant program for organizing a digital music library has grown to encompass all forms of media. A store allows for customers to purchase media directly to their iTunes library.
  •  Apple took the world by storm in 2001 with the release of the iPod. Soon the iPod became the go to device for portable music storage and playback. The iPod has seen numerous updates and spin-off devices since its inception. 
  • Keynotes or “Stevenotes” were major events for Apple consumers and stock holders. These presentations gave the world its first glimpse at products such as the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad.
  • Looking to improve the retail accessibility to Apple products, Steve Jobs opened the first few Apple Stores in 2001. Now Apple Stores are widespread and provide a multitude of merchandise, services and tutorials on Apple products.
  • In 2001 Apple brought its operating systems to the modern age with OS X and brought an end to the age of the “classic” Mac OS. Named after big cats, OS X has seen constant updates and is the second most used OS after Microsoft Windows.
  • The original MacBook was released in 2006 and replaced the PowerBook and iBook as Apple’s premiere laptop. It went on to become the best selling Mac in history and led to the release of the ultra thin MacBook Air in 2008.
  • Apple entered the cellular phone world with the iPhone in 2007. The smartphone was a massive success and changed the entire landscape of the cell phone world. The iPhone has since seen competition from Android phones but is still one of, if not the best selling phones worldwide.
  • Launched in 2008, the App Store was conceived to compliment the brand new iPhone and allow for customers to purchase and download apps to their devices. The store was such a success that an app marketplace has become standard on smartphones released since.
  • Steve Jobs envisioned a portable computer held in a book back in 1983. Fast forward to 2010 and Apple released the iPad, making Jobs’ vision a reality. Though the Newton was the first attempt at a tablet computer by Apple, it was not nearly the success that the iPad has become.
