15,000 tackle Tough Mudder challenge

More than 15,000 fitness fanatics have braved muddy waters, ice-cold baths, fire and 10,000-volt electric shocks on Victoria’s Phillip Island for Australia’s first Tough Mudder challenge.

A 20km course, designed by British Special Forces troops, tested hardy participants’ endurance with 27 obstacles on Saturday, with another 6000 entrants set to line up on Sunday.

The event saw 30,000 bananas and 150,000 cups of water handed out, along with 15,000 celebratory beers to each entrant who crossed the finish line, organisers said.

The challenge has also raised $47,000 dollars for Legacy Australia.

Tough Mudder founder and CEO Will Dean said the challenge, which arrived in Australia after surging popularity overseas, had been the biggest in the event’s international two-year history.

“It’s great to see the camaraderie and team work among participants and the sense of accomplishment on people’s faces as they cross the finish line,” Mr Dean said.

Tough Mudder will return to Australia at Glenworth Valley, near Sydney, on September 22-23. Events are also planned for Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in 2013, organisers said.
