18 die, dozens injured in India stampede

At least 18 people have been killed and 40 others wounded in a stampede in the Indian city of Mumbai, reports say.

The tragic incident took place shortly after 1:00 a.m. local time on Saturday (1930 GMT on Friday) when a large crowd of people gathered to pay their last respects to the Muslim spiritual leader Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, who passed away at the age of 102, Trust of India news agency reported.

The cause of the stampede outside the residence of the late leader is still unclear.

The 102-year-old was a leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community, which is a sect of Shia Islam. He died at his home on Friday.

The deceased leader’s funeral is expected to be held later on Saturday.

Fatal stampedes are common during religious festivals in India.

In October 2013, some 115 devotees were crushed to death or drowned on a bridge close to a Hindu temple in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

In February of the same year, nearly 40 people trampled to death as pilgrims were going home from the Kumbh Mela religious festival on the banks of the Ganges River.

More than 100 Hindu devotees lost their lives in a stampede in January 2011 in the state of Kerala, while 224 pilgrims were killed in September 2008 as thousands of worshippers rushed to reach a temple in Jodhpur.
