The incident occurred at a US-run base in Lashgar Gah, the provincial capital, on Monday.
“An individual wearing Afghan army uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing two,” ISAF spokesman Major Jason Waggone said.
The gunman, whose nationality remains unknown, was killed on the spot after opening fire on the foreign soldiers.
The Afghan military and NATO have launched an investigation into the killings of the two British soldiers, an ISAF statement said.
The incident is the latest in a series of deadly attacks on international troops.
The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan despite the presence of thousands of US-led forces in the war-wracked Asian country.
