Bnei Zion Hospital in Haifa |
An Israeli hospital delivered a record large baby, according to reports.
Bnei Zion Hospital in Haifa delivered the heaviest baby in its history this week. The baby weighed 5.91 kg. or 13 pounds.
Army Radio reported that the mother is a resident of northern Israel. She underwent medical tests after she was admitted to the hospital. The hospital found that she had gestational diabetes and she had not been under complete medical supervision during pregnancy.
An ultrasound check found that the baby’s weight was too heavy so it was decided to perform a cesarean. The baby came at a weight that other babies do not usually reach until about six months
old.
The baby was subjected to an extensive set of tests under the supervision of the hospital for several days before being released in good condition along with his mother.
Prof. Arnon Wiznitzer, Director of the Women’s Hospital and Beilinson Hospital, told Army Radio that babies born over 4 kilos or over 10 pounds have a high risk of obesity and a high risk of developing diabetes later on in life.
The mother told hospital staff that while this pregnancy was more complicated than her previous pregnancies, she had no idea how large the baby has become.
